The response of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Employees General Union (CUEGU) to “CUHK Statement on the Cabinet of the CUSU Executive Committee” (February 26, 2021)
The Chinese University of Hong Kong issued a statement on February 25 (yesterday) in response to an earlier statement made by the recently elected CU Student Union “Syzygia” on February 3. The University resolved to suspend various support to CUSU including the University’s practice of collecting student union fees on behalf of CUSU, withholding its administrative support to the SU Executive Committee and provision of venues for its activities until further notice.
We deeply regret the University’s statement. Over the years, CUHK has been tolerant and inclusive of student organizations and a diversity of academic thoughts, and it is a place where teachers, students and organizations have been able to learn from each other.
In this light, the University’s actions towards Syzygia deeply saddened the CUHK community including alumni, teachers, students, and staff. The actions are overly harsh and the decision lacks transparency. It also raises the concern of whether the actions were taken under political pressure.
We urge the University to immediately retract the statement, safeguard academic and intellectual freedom, and respect the autonomy of student organizations.
